Now that they were up close, the girls realized that Finch wasn’t mean; he was tired. They looked at the other scouts working feverishly. Darling had even fallen asleep over her stack of electrical bills. They were the same age as the girls, yet they looked far older.

“Can you tell us about some of your other badges?” asked Peggy, perching on the edge of Finch’s desk. “We’re a little behind on our own and it would be a big help.”

Finch pulled himself up from the crumbly chair. “Well, this one”—he pointed to a badge with what appeared to be a toothbrush on it—“was my Cleanliness Badge, for scrubbing Scout Leader’s floors. And this one”—he pointed to a badge with an embroidered carrot—“is a Nutrition Badge, for making Scout Leader one hundred peanut butter sandwiches! And this one”—he pointed to a badge with a cat and dog on it—“is a Veterinary Badge, for grooming Scout Leader’s poodle.”
